The Sutil/Raikkonen Story

No story at the German Grand Prix can quite top that of Mark Webber winning the race in his 130th race in the series and after a hellish winter with a broken leg. But certainly the weirdest - and saddest - story in the race was that of Adrian Sutil and Kimi Raikkonen colliding.

Yes, it was a case of deja vu. Remember Monaco last year when Sutil had the greatest race of his short F1 career and was likely to finish in fourth position until Raikkonen collided into the back of his car and knocked him out with a handful of laps left in the race?

And now, after Sutil was one of the highlights of the race in Germany, qualifying seventh, and rising to as high as second position, guess what happens right after his pit stop after Lap 27? He and Raikkonen collide. Sutil’s Force India is damaged and makes another pit stop immediately and he drops to 17th position and one of the great thrilling parts of the races is over.

The race stewards decided it was just a race incident.

Sutil and Raikkonen spoke to each other and they concluded something similar, to judge from their statements to the press.

“When I went out of the pit lane I saw Kimi coming on the outside of the corner and I just tried to hold my line but he went to the outside and I touched him and lost part of my front wing,” said Sutil.

Kimi, for his part, was less descriptive: “These things happen in racing, we spoke to one another and I think that he also sees it that way, as indeed did the Stewards.”

Well, too bad, is all I can say…. Oh yes, and let’s hope they don’t meet up again during another exceptional race by Sutil.
